"Daughters of the Dust" tells the story of a family of African-Americans who have lived for many years on a Southern offshore island, and of how they come together one day in 1902 to celebrate their ancestors before some of them leave for the North. The film is narrated by an unborn child, and ancestors already dead also seem to be as present as the living.。28岁的私人女侦探乔尔受雇调查女诗人麦吉的失踪案，查案过程中，遇到了麦吉的女老师戴安娜。她是个热情十足的女人，特别对女人情有独钟，乔尔也无可自拔地爱上了这个女人，在热情似火的同性恋情中，乔尔发现戴安娜与麦吉的死有关，但被热情所蒙蔽，乔尔妥协了。直到她自己的生命也受到了威胁……。
